My Art Journey: Del Kathryn Barton

Stepping into the world of Del Kathryn Barton's artwork was an experience that surpassed all expectations. As a creative tour de force, her pieces exuded an incredible energy that resonated deeply within me. Introduced to her work by my daughter during her final year of studio art in 2017, Del has become a significant influence now for both of us. Her journey as an artist, despite our divergent paths in life, became a powerful source of inspiration for me as I embarked on my own artistic pursuits later in life.

The fact that Del and I were born in the same year only strengthens the connection I feel to her work. While she shines as a superstar in the art world, I find myself at the opposite end of the spectrum. Our lives have taken different paths, but spiritually, I see Del as a representation of the part of me that pursued her artistic dreams relentlessly, achieving incredible success. I rejoice in her genius and find comfort in the knowledge that she embodies countless possibilities of artistic expression.

Del's masterful use of colour and her ability to seamlessly combine drawing and painting on a single canvas resonates deeply with me. It was a revelation that shattered the barriers imposed upon me during my time in art school. The idea of painting and drawing together was discouraged, but Del's approach sets me free. She has granted me permission to pursue my innermost desire to merge these approaches, inspiring me to overcome some of the art school hurdles all those years ago.

Del's artwork is a vibrant, layered, and immersive experience. Her pieces burst with intensity; each image is filled with intricate details that bring them to life. Standing in the presence of her creations at the Ballarat Art Gallery, I marvelled at their unbridled creativity. Having the opportunity to view the works up close, to immerse myself in their presence, revealed the true depth of Del's natural skill for balance. As an artist, she embraces maximalism, yay, thank God, a quality that speaks directly to my creative spirit.

Despite recently undergoing painful surgery and being confined to a period of rest, my determination to witness Del's artistry firsthand led me on a journey to the Ballarat Art Gallery. Overcoming the challenge of finding someone to accompany me and secretly disappearing, I eagerly sat and watched her short film, "Mother," repeatedly. In that little side room, I immersed myself in her artistic universe, continuously marvelling at her unparalleled creativity displayed on the gallery walls. It was an experience that revealed so much and for me, the true revelation was Del's exceptional talent for balance.

Del Kathryn Barton, your artistry is a constant source of inspiration. Your ability to transcend boundaries and achieve greatness ignites my creative spirit. I extend my heartfelt gratitude for the profound impact your work has had on Australian art, female artists and my artistic journey. To witness an Australian female artist thriving overseas fills my creative heart with joy and admiration. Thank you, Del, for being an unwavering inspiration.
